Tech upgrades make the 2020 Audi A4 a more compelling pick

Competition moves quickly in the luxury sport sedan class. One year after the refreshed BMW 3 Series arrived with an updated look, more power, and improved infotainment, the 2020 Audi A4 responded in kind with new front-end styling, LED headlights, and similarly updated infotainment. The updates complement the A4's impressive list of attributes: fast, comfortable, stocked with desirable features.

The A4’s roomy cabin has plenty of room for four adults and its tasteful design, punctuated with satin metal accents, makes the A4 feel like a car slightly from the future. That feeling is reinforced by an updated infotainment system with revised software and a 10-inch touchscreen display fixed on the dash, a step up from earlier seven-inch and 8.3-inch displays.

The 2020 Audi A4 generates 188 horsepower from its turbo four-cylinder engine in front-wheel-drive layout or 248 hp with all-wheel drive. Although many of its rivals make more power, the A4 never feels lacking.

5 reasons to buy the 2020 Audi A4

What We Like

Performance: The 2020 A4 is quick and smooth, with a quieter engine than most other turbo four-cylinder-powered competitors. But that silence doesn’t mean slow, with the A4 dashing to 60 mph in just over 5 seconds. The power is a great complement to the Audi’s impressive traction and neutral handling through curves and corners.

Interior: The A4’s stylish and functional cabin is a showpiece of fit and finish. There’s a clear emphasis on blending cutting-edge tech with traditional luxury details like satin metal accents and knobs and switches that operate with precise action. The design is simple and elegant, highlighted by thoughtful placement of commonly used controls and innovative thinking. The optional digital gauge cluster brilliantly re-creates real analog gauges while displaying navigation and infotainment. You’ll find sufficient legroom for four adults and plenty of ease getting in and out.

Technology: Audi has typically held an edge on its rivals with faster, sharper, and flashier in-car tech and infotainment, and the new 10-inch touchscreen is a return to form. It features revised software for improved processing times and response, and new refinements to the digital display. Some Audi fans might miss the dial controller from earlier models, but the touchscreen is an easy reach for most drivers, and the screen is angled slightly toward the driver.

What Needs Improvement

Engagement: The Audi A4 is well balanced but lacks a certain sizzle behind the wheel. Most of this comes down to steering feel. The best steering communicates to the driver what the tires are doing via resistance, effort, and weight. But the A4 feels a little numb, as if a gauzy layer separates the steering wheel and tires. The electric power steering control shares some of the blame, and many drivers probably won’t even notice. But drivers who like to dash through tight turns may occasionally be frustrated.
