There's a strong chance that you don't need all of the space a midsize BMW X5 or even a compact X3 provide. If you're of the mindset of "Why should I pay for something I don't need?" perhaps the subcompact 2019 BMW X1 could be a good fit. Despite its petite footprint, the X1 is surprisingly accommodating inside.
For 2018, the X1's lineup has been organized into distinct trim levels rather than last year's series of option packages. Other changes include a standard rearview camera and options that include Apple CarPlay® and a wireless charging pad.
In addition to its spacious rear seats and large cargo capacity, we credit the BMW X1 for its sporty driving dynamics that make it one of the most entertaining choices in the subcompact luxury SUV class. In these categories, the X1 bests the Mercedes-Benz GLB, and Audi Q3.
Powerful and quick: Acceleration is brisk with the BMW X1. It accelerates to 60 mph in only 6.5 seconds, which is quicker than anything else in this class. This is all down to the potent turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 228 horsepower, as well as BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system that noticeably improves traction.
Sporty handling: Not only is the X1 quick, but it's also fun to drive on a twisty mountain road. The suspension is tuned for sporty handling with stiffer springs and shocks to counter body roll. Available all-wheel drive pays dividends by greatly improving traction and, by extension, driver confidence. This is the choice if you're looking to have a bit of fun behind the wheel.
Interior space: As fun as the BMW X1 is to drive, it's also very practical and convenient. The rear seats can easily accommodate adult-size passengers and the large 27-cubic-foot cargo capacity is as big as it gets among subcompact SUVs. As an added bonus, the low cargo floor should make loading heavy and bulky objects that much easier.
Compromised ride quality: Sadly, you can't have everything. An unfortunate side effect to the BMW X1's sporty handling is its stiff ride quality. Imperfections in the road surface are more noticeable than if you were riding in one of its competitors, which can result in more fatigue on longer trips. For drivers seeking more thrills, this compromise may be well worth a little comfort, so we suggest paying close attention when test-driving it.
