It's no surprise that SUVs are wildly popular with shoppers. It seems once drivers experience an elevated ride height and the convenience of a larger cargo space, they'll never go back to smaller sedans or wagons. Not everybody needs a midsize or even a compact SUV, though, and that's where the 2019 BMW X1 comes in. This subcompact SUV can almost be thought of as a large hatchback, yet it delivers all of the practicality most people need.
For 2019, the X1 got even more attractive with the addition of more standard features. You get more advanced driver-assist features (frontal collision warning, lane departure warning, and automatic high beams) as well as a built-in navigation system and Apple CarPlay®.
The 2019 BMW X1 is the sporty choice in the class, with plentiful power and sporty handling. It's also practical, with more cargo space than the Mercedes-Benz GLA, Volvo XC40, or the newly redesigned Audi Q3.
Potent power: While most subcompact SUVs in this class are adequate when it comes to engine power, the 2019 BMW X1 is closer to inspiring. With 228 horsepower coming from the turbocharged four-cylinder, the X1 reaches 60 mph in a class-leading 6.5 seconds. There's no drama when leaving the line with available all-wheel drive either.
Handles like a smaller car: The X1's powerful engine is augmented by its sporty handling. In many ways, it's as fun to drive as a smaller hatchback. The suspension is tuned to be firmer than rivals, reducing body roll when cornering and instilling confidence. BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system adds even more assurance and traction, whether you're having fun or simply commuting.
Accommodating interior: Compared to other SUVs in the class, the X1's cargo capacity is very generous. You can squeeze as much as 27.1 cubic feet behind the rear seats, and the low floor means you won't have to struggle as much with heavy and bulky objects. The rear seats are also spacious enough for adults, and they slide and recline for added comfort.
Ride comfort: The BMW X1's sporty handling is certainly a positive for many drivers, but its effect on ride comfort could certainly count as a drawback. The stiffer suspension tuning results in a rougher ride over less-than-perfect road surfaces and that can get tiresome after some time. The run-flat tires also contribute to the stiffer ride.
