One of the best attributes of an SUV is utility. It's right there in the name, but so is sport, and that aspect had been somewhat absent until BMW debuted the X6 way back in 2007. The 2019 BMW X6 continues its place among more conventional SUVs with its sloping rear roofline and hunkered-down stance that improves handling. That lower roof cuts into rear-seat headroom and cargo capacity compared to the related BMW X5, though.
Although the X5 was redesigned for 2019, the 2019 BMW X6 is largely the same as the previous year’s model, albeit with a few enhancements. Apple CarPlay® moves to the standard features list, along with automatic emergency braking and a blind-spot warning system. On the options front, several bundled packages benefit from feature additions.
The 2019 BMW X6 isn't the only fastback SUV out there, as other manufacturers caught on to this niche SUV form. The Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe and Audi Q8 follow a similar formula with comparable benefits and drawbacks.
Potent engine choices: Whether you pick the base 300-horsepower six-cylinder or the powerful 445-hp V8, you'll have more than enough power. The six-cylinder accelerates the X6 to 60 mph in a quick 5.8 seconds, and the V8 should get you there a second sooner. There's no doubt that the base engine is more than adequate for most drivers. The V8 should be reserved for power-hungry pilots only.
Smooth ride and comfy seats: The X6 corners with more athleticism than the typical SUV thanks to sporty suspension tuning. The added firmness results in a stiffer ride than the X5, but it's still very comfortable and compliant. The front seats enhance comfort with adequate cushioning and support that will keep you fatigue-free for many hours on the road.
Premium interior: The X6's interior is nearly identical to other top-tier BMW sedans and SUVs, with an elegant design that is both attractive and easy-to-use. Materials quality is excellent, from the supple leather upholstery to the wood or metal trim elements. Construction is also reassuringly solid.
Limited Interior space: If you're looking to capitalize on all available passenger and cargo hauling capabilities, you'd be better served by the all-new BMW X5. The X6's sporty roofline ends up cutting into rear headroom and legroom and reduces cargo capacity to 26.6 cubic feet. That's notably less than what the X5 offers.
