If you’ve been considering an SUV but still desire some driving inspiration, the 2022 BMW X6 could be the alternative you’ve been seeking. It’s based on the popular X5 but goes with a tapering rear roofline that gives the X6 a sportier fastback silhouette. This model is part of the third X6 generation that was introduced for the 2020 model year.
For 2022, the X6 lineup was trimmed back as the previous sDrive40i rear-wheel-drive six-cylinder model was discontinued, leaving only the all-wheel-drive versions. Elsewhere, wireless charging has also been dropped and a few features have been shuffled between option packages.
As with most “coupe-like” SUVs, the BMW X6 sacrifices some interior space for the sporty profile. Rivals include the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe, Audi Q8, and Porsche Cayenne Coupe. The X6 leans more toward the Cayenne in terms of performance but doesn’t abandon its luxury roots.
Potent engines: The BMW X6 can be had with a 335-horsepower turbocharged six-cylinder (xDrive40i) or a 523-hp V8 (M50i). Both are more powerful than the vast majority of drivers will ever need. The xDrive40i will accelerate to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds, while the M50i will beat it by almost a full second. For the rare driver who craves more, the high-performance X6 M (reviewed separately) will get you there in only 3.3 seconds.
Comfortable ride quality: Despite the BMW X6’s sporty exterior and sharp handling (for an SUV), it manages to maintain a high level of overall comfort. It has a firmer ride quality than the typical SUV, but it’s not so unyielding as to send shockwaves through the cabin with every pothole. It is a good choice for those who want a bit more excitement than the average SUV delivers.
Refined interior: Among competing “coupe-like” luxury SUVs, the BMW X6 is priced slightly higher, but it justifies that premium with an interior that is superior in many ways. The leather upholstery is both sturdy and supple while soft-touch materials adorn almost every surface that you’ll normally come in contact with. Underneath it all is a strong structure for a solid and reassuring feel.
Passenger and cargo space: The tapering roofline is the BMW X6’s most distinctive styling trait, but it also negatively affects interior space, which is one of the main reasons for getting an SUV in the first place. Compared to the more traditional BMW X5 that it’s based on, the X6 sacrifices an inch or so of rear-passenger headroom and almost 2 inches in legroom. Cargo capacity also drops from 33.9 cubic feet in the X5 to 27.4 cubic feet in the X6.
