The 2023 BMW X6 is a lesson in form over function, not to mention the thrill of having a powerful turbocharged engine under the hood of your luxury SUV. Based on the BMW X5, the X6’s tapered tail gives it a sleeker and sportier profile. Granted, this coupe-like design cuts into rear headroom and cargo space, two things the boxier X5 does better than its mechanical sibling. If you don’t mind that trade-off, then keep reading.
The X6 makes for a formidable challenger to the Porsche Cayenne, Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe, and Audi Q8 Sportback. The base 335-horsepower turbocharged inline-six is plenty powerful and is paired to a slick eight-speed automatic and standard all-wheel drive. The X6 M50i and X6 M are equipped with a twin-turbo V8 that serves up from 523 to 617 hp, depending on which you choose.
As expected in a luxury brand, the cabin is richly finished and features standard touches like ambient lighting, a panoramic moonroof, heated front sport seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
Turbocharged engines: The X6 is swift with its standard turbocharged six-cylinder engine, but it's downright fast with either of the two optional twin-turbo V8s. The X6 M with its optional Competition package delivers 617 hp to all four wheels and has sports-car-like acceleration.
Sporty but supple suspension: Despite its focus on style and speed, the X6 is very comfortable during everyday driving. The suspension is firm, though BMW has made sure it remains smooth and balanced even over bumpy and pockmarked roads.
Cabin design and trim: The interior of the X6 is befitting of a vehicle that easily breaks the $100,000 barrier in upper trim levels. Ambient lighting, a panoramic moonroof, and leather seating surfaces create a handsome cabin in which to power your rapid BMW SUV down the road.
More money, less practicality: Less of a direct criticism of the X6 itself, the fact is that coupe-like SUVs cost more and deliver less than their more square-shaped stablemates. The X6’s sloping roof means second-row headroom and cargo space are sacrificed in the name of fashion.
