The 2020 BMW X6 underwent a complete redesign, continuing its unique lineage as the first coupe-like SUV when it debuted in 2007. Compared to the BMW X5 on which it is based, it features a sloping rear roofline, along with a lower and wider stance that improves handling performance. Under the hood, the X6 shares its six- and eight-cylinder engines with the X5, but both engines produce more power than before.
All of these enhancements are sure to please drivers who prioritize performance, but more pragmatic shoppers may be better served by the more conventional X5. That's because the tapering roofline cuts into rear passenger space and notably reduces cargo capacity by a few grocery bags. The X6 should be accommodating enough for most needs, though, and other sporty SUV coupes have similar challenges.
Of the few coupe-like luxury SUVs that compete against the 2020 BMW X6, we count the Audi Q8, Porsche Cayenne Coupe, and Land Rover Range Rover Velar as the closest rivals.
Quick acceleration: The BMW X6 is a powerful SUV, with two engine options to choose from: a 335-horsepower six-cylinder and a 523-horsepower V8. Both engines provide impressive acceleration, with the six-cylinder reaching 60 mph in 5.3 seconds and the V8 in just 4.1 seconds. This level of speed may seem excessive to most drivers, but spirited drivers will find it exhilarating.
Comfortable cruising: The BMW X6 strikes a balance between ride comfort and performance. The M50i model, in particular, has a firmer adaptive suspension that can be adjusted to prioritize either comfort or handling. Despite the X6's sporty nature, the interior remains quiet and peaceful at highway speeds. This is a rarity among sporty SUVs, which often sacrifice ride comfort in favor of improved handling.
Interior refinement: The interior of the BMW X6 is virtually indistinguishable from that of the premium 7 Series sedan. It boasts a refined and sophisticated style, with high-quality materials and sturdy construction. The digital instrument panel and infotainment touchscreen add hints of tech, while the buttons and knobs are all logically placed for easy use. Overall, the X6's cockpit is a pleasantly luxurious place to spend some time.
Smaller on the inside: The BMW X6's sporty rear roofline may be a defining characteristic, but it also causes some issues. The sloping roof reduces rear-seat headroom and legroom compared to the X5, and taller passengers may have to stoop to get in. Additionally, the X6 has less cargo capacity than the X5, with a capacity of 27.4 cubic feet versus 33.9 cubic feet.
