The 2021 Chevrolet Camaro has the straight-line speed of a muscle car and the nimble handling of a true sports car. The Camaro’s 455-horsepower V8 and 335-horsepower V6 engines deliver quick acceleration, and even the base turbocharged four-cylinder engine feels peppy and strong. It comes as a coupe and a convertible, too. Where the Camaro stands out from other muscle cars is its sharp handling in any trim. The Camaro’s performance and low-slung looks require some tradeoffs, with the Camaro having poor visibility, a tight cabin, and limited trunk space.
For 2021, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were added to the Camaro’s list of available features (wired versions are standard). The Camaro comes in quite a few trim levels: The base 1LS comes with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, while the mid-range 1LT and 2LT, and the loaded 3LT can be equipped with a V6. The base V8 model is called the LT1, and above that are the mid-range 1SS, and loaded 2SS. The champion of the lineup is the Camaro ZL1, which sports a hugely powerful supercharged V8.
Performance: The Chevy Camaro combines muscle-car quickness and sports-car handling to great effect. The available engines offer good straight-line acceleration, and the car’s confidence in the corners makes it engaging to drive. The Camaro’s driving experience can compete with more expensive sports cars.
Ride Quality: The Camaro’s available adaptive suspension offers a surprisingly smooth ride over a variety of surfaces, but even the standard suspension is more forgiving than you might expect. Considering the Camaro’s impressive handling, the ride quality stands out.
Standard features: The Camaro’s base trim, the 1LS, gets a power-adjustable driver’s seat, a 7-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and a Wi-Fi hotspot as standard features. Higher trims offer plenty of extra comfort, tech, and performance upgrades, but even the most basic model comes with some desirable features.
Usability: Living with a sports car requires some compromises, and the Camaro has quite a few. Visibility from the driver’s seat is poor, and the rear seat and trunk are both too small to be of much use. Some controls are placed awkwardly inside the cabin as well.

The original “pony car," the Ford Mustang has reinvented itself over the years, becoming a surprisingly effective sports car. The 2015-present Mustang splits the difference between a muscle car and a sports car, with sports car nimbleness and a muscle car's everyday livable suspension and comfort. The base setup on 2015-present models is a 2.3L turbo four-cylinder engine, making an impressive 310 hp. Connected to a fun six-speed manual transmission, the Mustang only drives the rear wheels. The GT trim increases the firepower—the 460-hp 5.0L V8 is better with the stick, but the 10-speed automatic is faster and simply better in stop-and-go traffic.
The 2015-2020 Ford Mustang GT Performance Pack delivers:
19-inch wheels
15-inch front rotors and six-piston Brembo® calipers
Magnetorheological dampers
The only way to make many other muscle cars feel slow is to compare them to the Hellcat. The 2019 Dodge Challenger is available in eight different trims—three of which are HEMI® V8s found in the R/T and SRT Hellcat models that range in whiplash-inducing power, up to 797 horsepower with 707 lb.-ft. of torque in the Redeye. Depending on the trim, the Challenger is available in either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive and features various performance upgrades and heritage styling cues, such as a dual-snorkel hood and fender flares. The 2019 Dodge Challenger offers seating for five and 16.2 cubic feet of storage capacity in the cargo area.
Built on the same platform as the Challenger and sharing many of the same standard features and engine options, you can't go wrong with the Dodge Charger. Just like the Challenger, the base 3.6L-V6-powered 2019 SXT comes standard with 17-inch alloy wheels, a push-start ignition, remote start system, and automatic headlights with LED daytime running lights. On the inside of the 2019 Charger expect a six-way power adjustable driver seat with cloth seating, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a seven-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth® and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.
