The Chevrolet Suburban is the granddaddy of large SUVs, as it has been around for 12 generations. This latest version debuted for the 2021 model year and is perhaps the most refined one yet. It offers a choice of three powerful engines, a comfortable ride, and three rows of seating for up to nine passengers. It competes with the Ford Expedition, Jeep Wagoneer L, and its corporate cousin, the GMC Yukon XL. The Suburban also features a cavernous cabin that provides plenty of room for cargo and passengers.
For 2023, the Suburban gained GM's Super Cruise™ technology as an option on the Premier and High Country trim levels. This feature allows for hands-free driving on designated highways and under certain conditions. The Suburban has numerous trim levels and features, but a standout item worth keeping an eye out for is the 6.2-liter V8. It was available on the RST trim and higher. It offers more power than the base 5.3-liter and in Edmunds' testing actually produced better real-world fuel economy numbers.
Impressive braking: When you're driving a vehicle this size, it is important to be able to have confidence in a panic stop. The Suburban scored highly during Edmunds' braking tests, which would be impressive for any SUV but was doubly so for a large three-row SUV. It felt confident and composed under forceful braking.
Roomy interior: A roomy cabin is what you expect from a large SUV and the Suburban delivers. The cabin has plenty of headroom and legroom in the first and second rows, and adults can fit comfortably in the third row provided they don't mind an upright seating position.
Excellent cargo space: Some SUVs provide interior comfort at the expense of storage space, but this is not the case with the Suburban. The rear cargo area has comparable storage space as its competitors, but when you fold down that second row to fit larger items, it offers significantly more than the Ford Expedition Max.
Visibility can be a challenge: There's no getting around blind spots on a vehicle this size. You'll need to be mindful that the rear of the vehicle will extend past your field of vision, so you have to be extra careful when changing lanes. Large side mirrors help to some extent, but thick pillars can impede your vision, and the tall and wide hood doesn't help matters up front. Thankfully, there are surround and front-facing cameras available, plus a blind-spot warning system.
