The Ford Bronco returned to the American market in 2021 with two models. The more traditional Bronco boasts extreme off-road capability. Then there’s the Bronco Sport, which carries much of the same styling but as a smaller crossover is designed more for everyday use. Still, the Bronco Sport brings good off-road prowess with an advanced four-wheel-drive system, and enthusiasts will appreciate the twin-clutch rear-drive unit with a differential lock. For the 2023 model year, Ford adds new Heritage editions, a Black Diamond off-road package, and some minor changes to available equipment. Ford offers the 2023 Bronco Sport in six trim levels that include the Big Bend, Outer Banks, Badlands, and the top-level Heritage Limited. Two engines are offered for Bronco Sport: a turbocharged three-cylinder engine putting out 181 horsepower and a more powerful 250-horsepower motor for the top-level trims. All Bronco Spots come standard with four-wheel drive. The smaller Bronco does quite well when leaving the pavement, making it quite competitive compared to other off-road models like the Subaru Outback and Jeep Cherokee.
Performance: The Bronco Sport—especially with the 2.0-liter engine option—delivers good power, certainly on par with the competition. The Bronco Sport really shines when it heads off-road. The four-wheel-drive system provides excellent traction, and the available all-terrain tires deliver good grip for confident excursions off the pavement.
Technology: Ford has one of the better infotainment systems on the market, which helps Bronco Sport set itself apart from the competition. All variants come with an easy-to-read 8-inch touchscreen display with standard Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay® smartphone integration. Adaptive cruise control is available, and it works quite well in stop-and-go traffic. Bronco Sport also features a Terrain Management System™ that fine-tunes the vehicle’s drive system for a variety of on and off-road conditions.
Storage: With a low load floor and high roof, the Bronco Sport provides good utility with a sizable cargo space. A flip-up glass window provides easy access to the cargo area while leaving the cargo door closed. The floor is rubberized, so it's easy to clean, and there are multiple hooks as well as lights and plugs that add to its overall convenience. The rear seats can be folded flat for additional space, and rear underseat storage cubbies are available.
Comfort: While the Bronco Sport does provide good space up front, the front seats don't offer much support, which is especially noticeable when traversing rough terrain. The suspension delivers a bumpier ride than expected both on the pavement and when off-roading. The rear seats are rather tight, and with small rear doors, it can be challenging to get in and out.
