The 2023 Ford Edge is a solid midsize SUV with two rows of seating, standard all-wheel drive, and plenty of stretch-out space. With a storage capacity of 39.2 cubic feet behind the rear seats, the Edge's cargo area can hold roughly 49 grocery bags. SUV shoppers who put a premium on interior space will be quite pleased. The rear seatback has a handy recline function too. Unfortunately, the large and chunky roof pillars don't do the outward visibility any favors.
A turbocharged four-cylinder paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission is standard and provides reasonable grunt for routine driving duties. Optional is a punchier twin-turbo V6 that’s fitted to the sporty ST trim. The cabin features a large 12-inch touchscreen that has quick response times, intuitive controls, and straightforward menus. It’s one of the top operating systems you’ll find among midsize SUVs, which include the Chevrolet Traverse, Honda Passport, Mazda CX-9, and Nissan Pathfinder. There are no major updates or changes to the Edge for the 2023 model year.
Cargo volume: People love the load-lugging capabilities of SUVs, and in this regard, the Edge excels. The standard manual rear liftgate swings upward to reveal 39.2 cubic feet of trunk volume. Fold the rear seat down and the space expands to more than 73 cubic feet, or enough to hold about 91 grocery bags. This compares well to many direct rivals. A hands-free power liftgate is also a convenient option.
Standard all-wheel drive: No matter which version of the Edge you choose, each one comes with all-wheel drive standard. It adds extra peace of mind for SUV shoppers who need a vehicle capable of handling all types of weather and slippery road conditions.
User-friendly tech: Ford did its homework when it came to engineering an infotainment system that doesn’t require a degree from MIT to operate. With its clear menus and sharp graphics, the 12-inch touchscreen fitted to every Edge is a pleasure to operate.
Transmission hunts for gears too often: While the Edge's transmission is smooth overall, it can be prone to busy shifting at times. This, coupled with how the throttle is programmed, can mean the car can occasionally take a beat to sort itself out. Sport mode does help shorten the delay by holding the revs longer.
