The 2023 Ford Expedition is Ford’s entry into the full-size three-row SUV category. The Expedition competes with the closely related Lincoln Navigator as well as the Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade. Other competitors include the Toyota Sequoia and the Nissan Armada. However, where many three-row SUVs seat seven or even six passengers, the Expedition will seat eight people.
This generation of Expedition was introduced for the 2018 model year, and it received a substantial refresh for the 2022 model year, all of which carry over to 2023. However, the 2022 Expedition upgraded many features from the infotainment system to the output of the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine. Ford also added the availability of BlueCruise assisted-driving tech. Changes unique to 2023 are limited to trim and colors.
Ford SYNC® infotainment: Ford was a pioneer in making voice control actually work, and it has developed the sophistication of the SYNC® 4 system. With the standard 12-inch or optional 15.5-inch tablet-style touchscreen, the Expedition offers a convenient and functional cabin tech experience. Couple that with the available Bang & Olufsen audio system, and the Expedition offers a world-class infotainment setup.
EcoBoost engine power: Depending on the trim level, the 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine delivers 380 horsepower, 400 hp, or 440 hp for the Expedition. Coupled with the 10-speed automatic transmission and your choice of rear- or four-wheel drive, this gives the Expedition outstanding towing capacity of 9,000 to 9,300 pounds when properly equipped for the family camping trailer, boat, or whatever you need to tow.
Cargo capacity: The Expedition is big. Even with all three rows of seats in use, you have 20.9 cubic feet behind the third row. That’s enough for weekend luggage for the whole family. If you fold the third row down, there’s 57.5 cubic feet, or enough for a four-person camping trip. Finally, with all the rear seats down, you can open up 104.6 cubic feet, which is big enough to handle major appliances.
Fuel economy: The reality is that a big SUV takes a lot of energy to move around. If you want the performance promised by Ford, you have to buy premium gas for the Expedition. Even if you’re light on the throttle, you probably won’t get the 17-19 mpg that the EPA estimates for the Expedition’s overall combined fuel economy.
