The 2023 Ford Mustang coupe and convertible are big in style and attitude, but even bigger in terms of performance. That’s especially true when scaling up to V8-powered models like the GT and Mach 1 trims, but even the base 310-horsepower turbocharged EcoBoost four-cylinder has plenty of power to make the Mustang come alive when you hit the gas pedal.
It’s hard not to be swayed by the exhaust sound and sheer speed provided by the optional 5.0-liter V8 engine. In top performance trims, it sends from 450 to 470 hp to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual or a 10-speed automatic transmission. The top dog of the lineup is the 470-hp Mach 1.
A completely new seventh-generation Mustang is due for the 2024 model year, so the 2023 model carries on without any notable changes. More comfortable on a daily basis than its rival, the Chevrolet Camaro, the Mustang also feels lighter on its feet than the bulkier Dodge Challenger.
Performance: What’s not to like about an unabashedly old-school take on a sports car? The Mustang is a thrill to drive, and it’s a tire-smoking stallion when ordered with the 5.0-liter V8.
Retro interior: The Mustang’s interior nicely balances modern interior essentials, like a user-friendly infotainment system, with classic touches like deep-set instrument gauges and cue-ball-style gear levers.
An everyday muscle car: So long as you’re traveling light and aren’t carpooling with tall adults, the Mustang makes for a very friendly everyday sports car. The sharp steering is matched by a firm ride that won’t rattle you to pieces over imperfect roads.
Cabin space and trunk volume: The back seat in the Mustang is tiny, even for kids. The long doors help make it easier to get back there. Just take caution in tight parking lots if you swing them out wide.
