Who said you can't have efficiency on a rugged midsized SUV. It certainly wasn't Jeep. On the 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe, Jeep has managed to redesign its fifth-generation SUV into a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). That's no small feat for an SUV with 20-inch wheels, and 470 lb-ft of combined torque. With four trim options available (Base, Overland, Trailhawk, Summit), the 2022 Cherokee 4xe can be found with a suite of driver aids, towing and cargo upgrades, and styled finishes. Whatever trip you might be cooking up, the Jeep Grand Cherokee will likely be up to the task.
It was once unthinkable to imagine a midsized hybrid SUV. Too big, the doubters said. But as the economy transitions to renewable energy, big muscular vehicles with hybrid powertrains are finding some purchase on the market. Jeep first introduced its new PHEV engine on its 2021 Wrangler, and after it became one of the year's bestselling hybrids (according to Jeep), it quickly fashioned the engine into the 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe. The 2.0L 375-horsepower four-cylinder engine sports a 14-kWh lithium-ion battery, which when fully charged and topped up with a full tank, can travel about 440 miles (for reference, in electric-only mode the Cherokee 4xe can travel an EPA-rated 26 miles).
The PHEV powertrain above doesn't just offer efficiency. It packs a punch. Fitted on a 4WD chassis with an eight-speed automatic transmission, the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe can handle a humble 470 lb-ft of torque and an estimated 6,000 lbs of towing capacity, when properly equipped.
The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe comes bedecked with driver aids. Standard on all trims are lane departure warning, blindspot monitoring, and parking sensors. On select trims, integrated side, front, and rear cameras are available as well, and offer the vehicle a panoramic sixth sense while you're managing long drives and city commutes.
The powertrain detailed above is the same for all four trims on offer for the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe. Choose the Trailhawk 4xe trim to significantly improve off-road capability with smarter, nimbler suspension and handling systems. Choose the Overland 4xe trim if you're more interested in improving interior and exterior amenities (e.g. upgraded exterior lighting, rain-sensing windshield wipers, windshield wiper de-icer system). Finally, choose the Summit 4xe trim if top-of-the-line style and detailing are your main priorities (e.g. illuminated doorsill trim, premium leather door panel trim, wood and leather steering wheel).
As a midsized SUV, the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe also sports room for all your needs inside. There are five seats, with 38.2 inches of legroom in the back. In the rear, you'll find 37.7 cu-ft of trunk space with the seats in place, which jumps to 70.8 cu-ft with all the backseats folded. The trunk also comes standard with a power hatch and deck lid, which makes loading and stowing that precious cargo easy and secure.
The interior of the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee takes good care of everyone aboard. There's dual-zone automatic climate control, power-adjustable front seats, and heated front and rear seats. For the driver, there's also a captain chair with memory settings and a heated steering wheel. Backseat passengers also benefit from charge-only USB ports and a nine-speaker stereo system.
