The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 is an affordable way to enjoy the three-pointed star

Affordability is not usually a Mercedes-Benz strong suit, but the 2022 GLA 250 lets drivers experience the three-pointed star without breaking the bank. At least, relatively speaking. The 2022 GLA 250 is the second year of the second generation of this compact luxury SUV, which represents a vast improvement over its predecessor (the 2015-2020 GLA 250).

Available in either front- or all-wheel drive, the GLA 250’s styling fits very well within the current crop of Mercedes-Benz SUVs, a clear baby brother to the GLB, GLC, and GLE. It also drives like a Benz should, with a well-controlled but comfortable ride, and decent acceleration from the turbocharged four-cylinder engine. It’s also very high-tech, featuring the MBUX infotainment system that includes standard smartphone integration. Although cargo space isn’t particularly impressive, the interior’s passenger space, especially for the front two occupants, certainly is.

The biggest downside to the GLA 250 is that, with the exception of automatic emergency braking, driver assist systems are on the options list. Considering these systems are standard on many 2022 economy cars, we feel it’s a shortcoming.

What We Like

Comfortable accommodations: The GLA 250 is a comfortable place to spend time in. Even in lower-end models, the seats provide good support for long or short drives, and there’s enough adjustment that tall or short drivers can find a sweet spot without too much trouble. That’s just the standard seats; examples with the optional multi-contour seats with heating and ventilation are even more comfortable. Add in the good ride quality and the Benz SUV is a solid road companion.

High tech: Known as MBUX, the infotainment system used in the GLA 250 comes standard with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto smartphone integration. It’s also one of the easiest in the industry to use, accommodating multiple control methods such as a touchscreen and trackpad, and accurate voice controls as well.

Luxurious interior: Along with being comfortable, the interior is easy to use. All of the primary controls are smartly placed and well-labeled, and many secondary controls are accessed through the touchscreen–a rare instance where this isn’t an annoyance. The interior is also surprisingly airy considering the GLA250’s small size, and there’s enough room in the rear for adults.

What Needs Improvement

Options overload: Like many European luxury brands, Mercedes-Benz leaves many features on the options list, which can make finding a used model with the features you want frustrating. Be sure to look for the Driver Assistance Package, which adds in adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist and other driver assistance features that we think should be standard equipment in the first place.
