If you’re looking for supercar performance for track-day fun, the 2014 Nissan GT-R delivers in a package that’s surprisingly easy to live with compared to other supercars. Despite its docile manners, the GT-R is the real deal. The twin-turbocharged V6 pumps out 545 hp, with the power tamed by a six-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission and sophisticated AWD system. The interior matches the performance potential, with deeply bolstered front seats to hold you in place and video-game-like screens that display G-forces during cornering, steering input, gear position and lap times.
The 3.8L twin-turbocharged V6 propels the 2+2 coupe to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds and 100 mph in about 8.0 seconds. The top speed clocks in at over 190 mph according to the manufacturer. All that power is accessible to anyone with driver-assist features like the rev-matching throttle-blip feature that makes you feel like a champion race driver. Suspension, brake engineering, all-wheel drive, antilock brakes, and stability and traction control help you carve curves with surefooted ease.
For 2014, the GT-R added the Track Edition to the lineup alongside the Premium and Black trims. The Premium edition boasts a long list of standard features, from Bluetooth® connectivity to heated power-adjustable seats to gigabytes of digital audio storage. The Black Edition is more austere, with lightweight black wheels, a carbon-fiber rear wing, a unique leather interior, and Recaro® racing seats. If you want to dial the GT-R experience up to 11, search for a Track Edition that was limited to 150 cars for the US. It builds on the Black Edition with firmer suspension tuning, cooling ducts for front and rear brakes and a rear-seat delete to lower the weight.
While the GT-R’s on-track performance turns heads, it also achieves surprising mpg figures. The mighty V6 gets an EPA-estimated 16 mpg city/23 mpg highway and 19 mpg combined, impressive for a supercar.
You’re never alone behind the wheel of the GT-R, as an array of technology helps you explore its limits with confidence. The driver-tunable vehicle dynamics let you select from highly engineered program settings that turn the couple from a comfortable cruiser to a race-ready supercar. The power steering, driver-adjustable suspension, and variable torque-split all-wheel drive deliver precision handling. If you want to push the envelope further, Race mode settings allow you to quicken shifts, adjust the shocks, and deactivate traction and stability controls.
For 2014, the Premium Interior package adds a hint of luxury with red amber leather seats and matching accents. Deep bolsters on the front seats hold you and your passenger in place during fast cornering. For an exotic performance car, the GT-R is welcoming for most people of even above-average height. Gauges are placed so the driver doesn’t have to move their head, while the center-mounted multifunction display tracks your lap times and other data to guide you in improving your driving skills.
