Part of the third generation, which was introduced in 2017, the 2021 Porsche 718 Cayman is still as impressive as ever. New for this model year is the addition of standard Apple CarPlay® connectivity, heated seats, and dual-zone climate control. The six-cylinder engine is a purist’s dream with a lovely exhaust note and plenty of power to boot.
1. GTS 4.0 trim
New for 2021 is the GTS 4.0 trim, which features the fantastic 4.0L flat-six engine without the need to jump to the top-tier GT4 trim. The GTS 4.0 offers 394 horsepower and has variable-damping sport suspension, a limited-slip differential, and sports seats. This makes it a great choice if you want to hear the rumble of that six-cylinder engine but don’t need something built for the race track like the GT4 model.
The 2021 Porsche 718 Cayman isn’t necessarily about speed. Instead, it’s the whole package. Of course, the GTS 4.0 model will still race to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds, but it’s not just about straight-line speed. Models with the variable-damping suspension offer a lowered ride height — 20 mm on the T and GTS 4.0; and 30 mm on the GT4 — for improved handling. Look out for the PDK automatic transmission if you want a quicker-feeling ride, but the standard manual transmission gives you extra control.
It’s easy to find the right driving position in the 2021 Porsche 718 Cayman. It might look like a cozy two-seater but everything is well proportioned, meaning you’ve got everything you need to hand. Heated seats are standard and you also get Apple CarPlay connectivity to soundtrack your next mountain cruise. Look out for some of the stand-alone available features such as a navigation system, keyless entry and ignition, blind spot monitoring, cruise control, and premium sound system options.
It’s possible to find the level of performance that suits you with the 2021 Cayman’s trim levels. At the top, you’ll find the Cayman GT4, which includes the naturally aspirated 4.0L flat-six engine, upgraded brakes, a fixed rear wing, and a lowered ride height with variable-damping sport suspension. If the four-cylinder is enough for you but you want the handling features of top-tier models, look for the Cayman T, which has the limited-slip differential and Sport Chrono package that are also found on the GTS 4.0 and GT4 trims.
The 2021 Porsche 718 Cayman, a sleek sports car, offers unexpected cargo space thanks to its mid-engine layout. It boasts a 5.3-cu-ft front trunk, perfect for stowing shopping bags, and an extra 4.4-cu-ft storage area in the rear, ideal for keeping a gym bag and other personal items. While it's not designed for bulkier cargo, the Cayman's storage capacity is fine for daily use, seamlessly blending sporty appeal with everyday practicality.
