When the Ram 3500 was redesigned in 2019, it received the most powerful diesel engine the company had ever offered. This engine continues to the 2020 model year, as does the overall design. Ram makes several feature upgrades for the 2020 model year, including available lane keeping assistance, adaptive steering, blind-spot warning, and an optional 50-gallon fuel tank. Offered with rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, the Ram 3500 is available as a regular cab or crew cab, or for maximum rear-seat space, there is the Ram Mega Cab. Buyers can choose from two engines, a 6.4-liter V8 or the 6.7-liter Cummins diesel six-cylinder. The latter can deliver up to 400 horsepower and 1,000 lb-ft of torque and boasts a maximum towing figure of 35,100 pounds. Various factors may impact towing capacity, including weight of passengers, cargo, and options/accessories. According to Ram, this is class-leading—higher than the Ford F-350 Super Duty, Chevrolet Silverado 3500, or GMC Sierra 3500.
Performance: With one of the most powerful engines available in the heavy-duty truck segment, it's hard to beat the Ram 3500 for overall towing and hauling performance. The ability to pull more than 35,000 pounds or haul close to four tons is more capability than most consumers will ever need, so this truck will seldom be overloaded.
Comfort: The Ram 3500 is available in multiple trim levels that range from basic to lavish, but all offer a spacious cabin with comfortable seats and a variety of useful storage cubbies. Upper-level trims like Longhorn or Limited bring interiors on par with luxury vehicles, with leather and wood trim and a long list of available amenities.
Technology: With an intuitive and easy-to-use infotainment system at its center, the Ram 3500 offers a range of high-tech features. There are multiple USB ports spread throughout the cabin and household 115-volt outlets both in the cabin and the bed. Higher-level trims can be fitted with a large configurable 12-inch vertical touchscreen display and Apple CarPlay®/Android Auto™ integration.
City driving: There is no getting around the fact that the Ram 3500 is a very large vehicle. While very capable of hauling and towing, it can be challenging to maneuver around a busy city. Up to 8 feet wide with the optional dual rear wheels, the Ram 3500 can be stressful to drive on narrow or busy roads and can prove too big to fit in many parking spots.
