A one-ton truck is the one to buy when you need to haul extremely heavy loads or tow large trailers, and the 2023 Ram 3500 is quite adept at both. When properly equipped and powered by the available Cummins turbodiesel engine, the Ram 3500 puts out 1,075 lb-ft of torque with the ability to tow just over 37,000 pounds. That’s 18.5 tons, folks. Various factors may impact towing capacity, including weight of passengers, cargo, and options/accessories.
Like its smaller Ram 1500 sibling, the Ram 3500 was redesigned for the 2019 model year with fresh styling and improved capability. For the 2023 model year, the Ram 3500 is available with a new 12-inch digital driver display, digital rearview mirror, trailer reverse steering control, and new camera enhancements. Available in trim levels that range from the basic Tradesman to the lavish Limited, the Ram 3500 competes strongly against its two primary rivals: the Ford F-350 and Chevrolet Silverado 3500.
Capability: The primary reason for buying a Ram 3500 is its heavy-duty hauling and towing abilities, and the big truck doesn’t disappoint. Maximum towing ability is among the tops in the class at 37,090 pounds, and the Ram 3500 can haul up to 7,680 pounds in its bed—that’s more than the total weight of a fully loaded F-150.
Comfort: Like the other models in the Ram truck family, the Ram 3500 features a roomy, comfortable cabin, especially with the aptly named Mega Cab, which boasts the largest rear seat in its class. While lower trims are on the basic side, higher-level versions are outfitted with quality-feeling materials. All Ram 3500s feature acoustic glass and active noise cancellation, making the cabin surprisingly quiet.
Technology: Available with an eight-inch or 12-inch touchscreen display, the Ram 3500 features the Uconnect® infotainment system, one of the most user-friendly on the market. With the addition of the new digital driver’s display, the heavy-duty truck has a high-tech vibe. Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay® connectivity is also available.
Maneuverability: The Ram 3500 is an excellent choice when you're taking advantage of its extreme hauling capabilities. It's not, however, an ideal vehicle for cruising through town. Large and wide, the Ram 3500 can be challenging to park, assuming you can find a space it will fit in.
