Toyota offers a broad range of SUVs, but it seems there’s always room for one more. For the 2022 model year, the automaker introduced the all-new Corolla Cross. Based on the Toyota Corolla, the Corolla Cross slots into the lineup between the front-wheel-drive C-HR and the popular RAV4. The Corolla Cross features a roomy interior with good utility and becomes the smallest crossover Toyota offers with available all-wheel drive. The 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross is available as an L, XL, or XLE, each offered with front-wheel drive or optional all-wheel drive. All Corolla Cross trims get a fuel-efficient 2.0-liter 169-horsepower four-cylinder engine teamed with a continuously variable transmission. Corolla is one of the best-selling cars in America, so it makes perfect sense to build a crossover SUV based on this popular car. The Corolla Cross joins a quickly growing segment of compact crossover SUVs, including the Chevrolet Trailblazer, Honda HR-V, Hyundai Kona, Kia Seltos, and Mazda CX-30.
Interior: The Corolla Cross may be an entry-level vehicle, but the interior features a clean design that gives this small crossover a premium feel. The front seats have nice padding for good comfort, even on longer drives. The rear seat is not as comfortable as up front, but there’s reasonable legroom and headroom to fit two adults.
Storage: It may be a compact crossover, but the Corolla Cross offers a surprisingly spacious cargo area that can handle up to 25 cubic feet of cargo. The split rear seats can be folded flat to handle larger items. There’s also good storage for smaller items in the cabin, with ample storage in the bin under the armrest as well as in the center console.
Technology: Toyota offers an optional 8-inch touchscreen display with an easy-to-use infotainment system. While there is no native navigation available, Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay® integration is standard, although they do require a wired connection. Toyota's suite of driver aids is standard across the lineup, including features like adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assistance.
Performance: With an emphasis on efficiency and comfort, the Corolla Cross is not terribly fun to drive. Acceleration is slow compared to other vehicles in this class, requiring some forethought before you pull out into a busy intersection. While handling is not bad, ultimately this compact SUV is not very exciting to drive.
