With the idea that there should be a crossover SUV for every need, Toyota offers the compact Corolla Cross. Introduced in 2022, the Corolla Cross is based on the Corolla (no surprise here) and slots just below the popular RAV4 on the size chart. Just a year old, the Corolla Cross gets several updates for the 2023 model year, including a new infotainment system with wireless Android Auto™/Apple CarPlay® integration. Toyota offers the Corolla Cross in three trim levels: L, LE, and XLE. All variants are powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 169 horsepower. Front-wheel drive is standard, but all trims can be equipped with all-wheel drive. Toyota also offers the Corolla Cross with a hybrid powertrain, which is covered separately. With a comfortable cabin and surprising utility for a compact crossover, the Corolla Cross compares well against other compact SUVs, including the Honda HR-V, Hyundai Kona, Kia Seltos, and Mazda CX-30.
Technology: The Corolla Cross comes standard with Toyota’s latest infotainment system, displayed on an 8-inch touchscreen display. The system is easy to navigate with static shortcuts on the left of the screen, and the physical volume knob is a plus. Wireless connectivity for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay is also standard. A full suite of advanced driver-assist systems, including adaptive cruise control, comes on every Corolla Cross.
Interior: While it isn’t fancy, the Corolla Cross has a roomy interior with a clean design and materials that provide a premium feel. The front seats offer good support and remain comfortable even on long drives. The rear seat is not as comfortable, but it can still fit two adults with reasonable legroom and easy access thanks to the wide-opening rear doors.
Storage: Cargo space is surprisingly generous in the Corolla Cross, with 25 cubic feet of storage behind the rear seats—and the space can be expanded by folding the rear seats. The cabin also offers up ample space for keeping smaller items with two large cupholders, a good-sized covered center console, and large bottle holders in the doors.
Performance: The Corolla Cross is built around comfort and efficiency; unfortunately, performance takes a back seat to these priorities. With only 150 lb-ft of torque and a continuously variable transmission (CVT), the small crossover is not quick off the line. Passing slower vehicles takes considerable planning since it takes a while for the Corolla Cross to gain speed.
