The Toyota GR86 was launched for the 2022 model year as the second generation of the Toyota 86, which started out in 2013 as the Scion FR-S. The addition of GR stands for "Gazoo Racing," which is Toyota's in-house racing division. The redesigned 86 had several substantial performance improvements over the prior generation. For example, the 2022 GR86 delivers 228 horsepower from a 2.4-liter engine, which is an increase of more than 20 horsepower. The GR86 also rides on an upgraded suspension for crisp handling. The car's bodywork was also updated.
The GR86 includes a rear seat, but it's very small. For practical purposes, you can consider this a two-seat car with emergency four-passenger capabilities. The 2022 GR86 was offered in just two trim levels, known as base and Premium. The Premium trim includes adaptive LED headlights (which swivel as you turn the steering wheel for better illumination in curves), a larger rear spoiler, and heated seats. Competing models include the nearly identical Subaru BRZ (built on the same production line) and the Mazda Miata.
Sports car handling: The GR86 is a classic momentum sports car, with a comparatively low horsepower engine and a firm suspension. The GR86 loves to turn, and sports car fans will love its lively handling and grip.
Available manual transmission: Few modern cars offer a manual transmission option, but if you prefer to shift your own gears, the GR86 includes an easy-to-use clutch and a crisp six-speed. If you prefer an automatic, that gearbox is also a six-speed, with fast, smooth shifting that gives up very little performance compared to the manual.
Improved power: The first-generation 86 came with a two-liter engine with around 200 horsepower. The 2.4-liter in the GR86 is rated at 228 horsepower, which makes a big difference in perceived engine power from the driver's seat.
Interior noise: A firm sports car suspension and lightweight chassis bring a trade-off: road noise. If you have to travel long distances on rough roads, the GR86 will transmit more noise and vibration into the cockpit than a larger, heavier car would.
