If you’re after a comfortable, high-tech, and unique battery-electric sedan, take a look at the 2016 Toyota Mirai. Featuring cutting-edge hydrogen fuel-cell technology, you get all the benefits of an electric powertrain — instant torque, zippy acceleration, and quiet to drive — with a more traditional refueling experience. Combine this space-age technology with radical exterior styling and a spacious cabin, and you have an almost one-of-a-kind driving experience.
The 2016 Toyota Mirai is powered by a battery-electric motor and hydrogen fuel cell, setting it apart from traditional EVs. Instead of plugging it in to charge the battery, you instead fill up with hydrogen. This powertrain is not only capable of achieving an EPA-estimated 67 MPGe combined, as well as an EPA-estimated range of 312 miles on a full tank but all of this while producing EPA-estimated tailpipe greenhouse gas emissions of 0 grams per mile.
The business end of the 2016 Mirai’s powertrain features a front-mounted electric motor producing 151 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque. Additionally, a 1.6-kWh battery is used to provide an extra boost of power when required. Given the nature of electric motors and the instant torque delivery they provide, this powertrain is ideal for zipping around town. This means the 2016 Mirai can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 8.7 seconds.
To match the high-tech internals, the 2016 Toyota Mirai features equally cutting-edge exterior styling to make it stand out from the crowd. From the thin headlights and angular front grille to the sculpted body and sleek roofline, this is a vehicle that’s sure to turn heads as you drive past. The styling is complemented by a choice of five available exterior colors, including the appropriately named Nautical Blue Metallic.
If the 2016 Mirai is so eye-catching on the outside, what’s it like on the inside? There’s seating for up to four passengers, with a particularly generous 42.5 inches of front-seat legroom and 30.1 inches of rear-seat legroom. Additionally, there are numerous standard tech and comfort features for you and your passengers to enjoy, including dual-zone automatic climate control, heated seats front and rear, and an eight-inch touchscreen interface.
To make every journey as relaxing and stress-free as possible, the 2016 Mirai comes with a full selection of driver convenience features. These include lane departure alert, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision mitigation with automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. Additionally, special sensors are used to monitor the hydrogen tanks and will issue warnings and shut down the system if a leak is detected.
