Settling into the second year of its fourth generation, the 2020 Audi A8 expands its engine choices with a new plug-in hybrid V6 engine option. This version allows for 17 all-electric miles before kicking it back to the combination of V6 and electric motor, improving the EPA-estimated fuel economy to 23 mpg combined. Alternatively, a 453-hp 4.0-liter V8 is included with 60 TFSI models, getting an EPA-estimated 18 mpg combined. Fuel economy figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new. Fuel economy may vary for reasons like driving conditions and vehicle history. Unless specified, figures are for vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission. See fueleconomy.gov. Overall, the driving experience is effortless and positively predictable.
Standard amenities are generous, such as Amazon Alexa capability, Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ smartphone integration, an adaptive air suspension, two USB ports, a high-quality Bang & Olufsen® audio system, and a panoramic sunroof. Audi offers a full-leather interior and dual-pane acoustic glass as upgrades. Audi embraces its inner techie with the 2020 A8, featuring its 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit front and center to provide a comprehensive set of information to the driver.
Interior: As expected from the large, spacious sedan, the A8 delivers comfort and ride quality to match that of models from rivals like Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Passengers are the main focus in Audi’s bread-and-butter sedan, and they’ll enjoy lavish amenities and upscale materials that give the A8 a refined feel. Every surface looks and feels as though quality is prioritized.
Comfort: The front and back seats are highly adjustable. Plus, massaging seats and a right rear passenger massaging footrest are available for ultimate pampering. But the secret sauce is in the standard adaptive air suspension, which does a terrific job of smoothing out the edges of the ride. Upgrade to the 60 TFSI variant, which comes with a V8, to get the predictive active suspension for an even better ride quality.
Technology: Audi’s new multimedia interface looks impressive and might even feel a bit overwhelming at first. The brand has painstakingly created a system that is highly configurable and displayed on standard 10.3-inch upper and 8.6-inch lower screens with information like weather, navigation, and music ready for activation with one touch.
Personality: The A8, while well-equipped, lacks style. This big sedan does what it’s supposed to do and does it well, but it’s not going to gain an edge for innovative design. For some, though, that’s more than enough.
