The sleek and sporty 2020 Audi Q8 is luxurious and fun to drive

The 2020 Audi Q8 sits above the three-row Q7 in the Audi lineup as a prestige vehicle to compete against similar coupe-like SUVs from BMW, Porsche and Mercedes-Benz. This stylish and sporty luxury SUV trades some practicality for its style but is still perfectly usable for day-to-day.

Backing up the Audi Q8’s sporty styling are excellent driving dynamics, with good acceleration from the V6 engine, admirable handling and steering, and a comfortable ride. Activate the Sport mode, and the suspension stiffens, the steering sharpens, and the engine feels more aggressive.

The Q8 never forgets it's a luxury vehicle, coddling its front and rear passengers in comfort. There’s good cargo space behind the second row, although we’d like to see more space inside for small-item storage. The touchscreen infotainment system has a bit of a learning curve, but it supports wireless smartphone integration. Unfortunately, like a lot of automakers, Audi makes you pay extra for a full suite of driver assist systems, so look for Premium Plus and above trims.

5 reasons to buy the 2020 Audi Q8

What We Like

Driving dynamics: The Audi Q8 is no lightweight, so the fact that it’s fun to drive is surprising. The steering and suspension are responsive, but the Q8 doesn’t compromise on comfort, either. The Sport mode sharpens everything up a notch to give the Q8 an even more satisfying feel behind the wheel.

Comfort: The suspension isn’t the only source of comfort in the Q8. Audi has designed the front seats with firmly supportive padding, but with enough give to ensure that they’re excellent for long-haul trips. The same is true for the rear seats as well, which is especially nice to see because they often get little attention, even in luxury vehicles.

Roomy interior and cargo: Front and rear occupants have no shortage of head and legroom, which contributes to the overall feeling of comfort. The cargo area is also generous, and if the need arises, the Q8 can tow up to 7,700 pounds when properly equipped—pretty stout for this class of vehicle.

What Needs Improvement

Driver assist systems reserved for higher trims: Unfortunately, Audi follows the lead of other European brands by putting its complete suite of driver assist systems on higher trim levels, and not making them standard. The base Premium models come with automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning, but if you want adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist, you’ll have to step up to the Premium Plus model or higher.
