The 2023 Audi Q8 is the big yet sporty luxury SUV alternative

The 2023 Audi Q8 is the brand’s flagship SUV, and when it was introduced in 2019, it showcased what the automaker was capable of. It’s based on the three-row Q7, but it opts for a sleeker profile with a tapering rear roofline and eliminates the third row of seats. It’s also available in higher-performance SQ8 and RS Q8 models that are reviewed separately.

For 2023, the Q8 gained Matrix-design LED headlights that automatically deactivate specific sections of the high beams to prevent blinding oncoming drivers. The available Convenience package added adaptive cruise control, while the Executive package upgraded to sound-insulated dual-pane glass. The top Prestige trim also added a remote parking system.

As much as we like the 2023 Audi Q8, it’s outclassed by rivals that include the Mercedes-Benz GLE, Porsche Cayenne, and BMW X5. If the Q8 had a less distracting infotainment interface and quicker engine response, it would help level the playing field.

5 reasons to buy the 2023 Audi Q8

What We Like

Smooth ride quality: Even though the Q8 is intended to be a sportier version of the Q7, it still provides plenty of comfort. The suspension strikes a very good balance between compliance for a smooth ride and firmness to allow for more engaging handling performance. Even better, the driver can adjust the adaptive suspension to be softer or stiffer through the selectable drive modes.

Refined interior: The Q8’s cabin benefits greatly from its modern yet understated design as well as an abundance of high-quality materials that grace almost every surface. Helping matters is a sturdy construction underneath that gives all of the elements a satisfying heft, with no detectable creaks or squeaks. Audi’s attention to detail is also evident in the consistent click emitted from every switch and screen tap.

Comfortable seats: The front seats have a wide range of adjustments to ensure you’ll easily find your preferred position without any sacrifices. The cushioning is on the firm side, but they’re well shaped for hours of comfortable touring. They come heated as standard, while ventilation and massage functions are available. The rear seats handily accommodate taller passengers too.

What Needs Improvement

Distracting touchscreen: Almost all of the Q8’s features are controlled via the two split touchscreens, which can be distracting if you simply want to adjust the temperature. Having those screens lower on the dashboard also requires the driver to take eyes off the road to use them. There are some voice controls that could alleviate some of the frustrations, but it’s not as good as Mercedes’ MBUX system.
