The 2017 M3 separates itself from the 3 Series, on which it's based, in many important ways. First, it's the M3's twin-turbo, inline six-cylinder engine. Producing 425 horsepower, this engine is paired with a standard six-speed transmission or an optional seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission (M-DCT) with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. A ton of engineering work was put into the suspension, steering, and brakes, too, making for a track-ready super sedan. Add a ton of great standard luxury and convenience features and you've got one amazing do-it-all car.
The 2017 M3 hides a turbocharged 3.0L inline-six-cylinder engine under the hood that cranks out 425 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. That's good for a zero-to-60 time of around four seconds (according to the manufacturer, when new). That is incredibly quick for a sports car, much less a sedan.
The 2017 M3 also has upgrades over the typical 3 Series that go beyond the powerful engine. Look for a sport-tuned suspension, an active locking differential, and a performance exhaust system. The exterior gets a purpose-built body kit and M3-specific body panels including a larger hood and wider fenders.
If 425 horsepower and a tuned suspension aren't enough, BMW gives you options. Search for the Competition package and you'll get a bump to 444 horsepower, but that's not all. It also adds forged 20-inch wheels, an M-sport exhaust, updated suspension tuning, and adjustable driving modes. The outside gets special trim and on the inside, you get lightweight M sport seats.
Standard technology features on the 2017 M3 include Bluetooth® phone and audio connectivity, a navigation system, an 8.8-inch display screen, a 16-speaker Harman Kardon® audio system, and a bunch of BMW ConnectedDrive apps.
The 2017 M3 also has quite a few driver-aids available. Look for the Driver Assistance Plus package which includes blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, a surround-view camera system, a speed-limit display, and a forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, and collision mitigation with automatic emergency braking. Extra peace of mind is always nice.
