BMW is known for performance and luxury and there's perhaps no better representative of this than the 2018 M4. This sport coupe is the two-door version of BMW's iconic M3 sedan and delivers similar athleticism and refinement. You get an abundance of power from the turbocharged six-cylinder, sharp handling, and an interior that looks and feels great. Normally, cornering performance results in an overly stiff ride quality, but thanks to selectable suspension modes, you can choose a softer setting for a calmer ride.
For 2018, the M4 received a minor refresh with subtly updated headlights and taillights. The rearview camera is standard equipment this year and BMW's iDrive infotainment system receives an update. These changes keep it fresh among its competitors, which include the Mercedes-AMG C 63 coupe, the redesigned Audi RS 5, and the Chevrolet Corvette.
Power and handling: The BMW M4 delivers all of the thrills expected of a luxury sport coupe, with a potent turbocharged six-cylinder engine that churns out 425 horsepower. In models with the Competition package, that figure increases to 444 hp. That's powerful enough to accelerate to 60 mph in only 4.4 seconds. Handling is just as impressive and instills enough confidence that you'll feel like a hero on your favorite road or track.
Pleasant ride quality: Despite the M4's sharp cornering abilities, there's no sacrifice in ride comfort. That's due in large part to the standard adaptive suspension, which can be set to a softer and more comfortable ride or a stiffer ride when you want to rail around turns. The Competition package further stiffens the ride but is still acceptable for those who prioritize performance.
Refined interior: There are certain standards that we expect from German luxury cars and the BMW M4 easily meets or exceeds them. The dashboard is logically arranged and attractive in an understated manner. The quality of materials is excellent for the class and there's a satisfying heft to everything you touch. As a BMW M car, you also get some extra flourishes that make it feel even more special.
Sound and feel: As well as the M4 accelerates and corners, it's still missing something. At low engine speeds, the engine and exhaust tend to drone uncharacteristically for a BMW and they don't really start sounding like a proper sport coupe until you're approaching the redline. The lack of steering wheel feedback is also a bit of a letdown because you don't feel as connected to the car or road as you would in some of its rivals.
