2020 Genesis G80 successfully challenges European rivals

The Genesis G80 maintains its status as the high-value new kid on the luxury block. An attractive exterior wraps around a plush cabin, while three capable drivetrains offer refined motivation. The 3.8 V6 base model, 3.3T Sport model, and 5.0 Ultimate V8 premium version are each outfitted with increasing levels of luxury. While the 5.0 Ultimate impresses with active LED headlights and a head-up display, even the base 3.8 model includes adaptive cruise control, an 8-inch touchscreen, and supple leather upholstery. The 3.3T Sport sits between the 3.8 and 5.0, with a turbocharged V6 engine and an adaptive suspension to improve driver engagement. All models feature an eight-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive available on every trim.

The G80 can't challenge the brand equity of German or Japanese luxury sedans yet, but everything from exterior styling to interior materials quality to advanced technology puts it on even footing with more established players, all at a lower cost, which translates to excellent value.

5 reasons to buy the 2020 Genesis G80

What We Like

Comfort: With plush, supportive seats and an opulent cabin the G80 earns its chops as a luxury sedan. A multi-zone climate control system is bolstered by intuitive controls and a vibrant touchscreen display featuring standard Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto. Visibility and rear seat headroom take a hit from the G80's sleek exterior design, but the overall driving experience is superb.

Technology: Premium features like adaptive cruise control, heated seats, automatic high beams, and dual USB ports come standard on the base 3.8 model. Additional features, like LED headlights, a head-up display, a 9.2-inch touchscreen, and a 17-speaker Lexicon audio system are available, as is the adaptive suspension found on the 3.3T Sport trim.

Performance: Both the 3.8-liter V6 and 5.0-liter V8 provide satisfying acceleration, while the G80's suspension delivers a comfortable and composed ride. The 3.3T Sport trim brings dynamic handling to the G80's pedigree, giving performance enthusiasts a worthy alternative to German rivals.

What Needs Improvement

Visibility: Visibility suffers from thick roof pillars, while the G80's low-slung roofline crimps rear seat headroom. Small porthole windows provide a bit of relief in back, and the G80's standard blind-spot warning system and rear camera help offset the issue, as does an available 360-degree exterior camera to ease parking maneuvers.
