2022 Genesis G80 continues to up its performance pedigree

The Genesis G80 has matched its German rivals in the areas of attractive design and high-quality interior materials, but it's still chasing them in the dynamics department. To address the issue, Genesis introduced a new 3.5T Sport model for 2022, with standard all-wheel drive, an active suspension, and available rear-wheel steering with 20-inch wheels on Prestige package cars. The 3.5T Sport is powered by a 375-horsepower turbocharged V6, while the entry-level 2.5T offers a turbocharged four-cylinder engine making 300 horsepower. Both models use an eight-speed automatic transmission, with rear-wheel drive standard on the 2.5T and all-wheel drive available. The 2.5T base model comes with LED exterior lighting, a 12-speaker audio system, and a 14.2-inch touchscreen as standard equipment. The 3.5T adds a sunroof, wireless charging, and a 21-speaker Lexicon audio system.

The Genesis G80 continues to shadow iconic midsize luxury sedans like the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. At this rate, those pricier German offerings may find themselves in the G80's shadow someday soon.

5 reasons to buy the 2022 Genesis G80

What We Like

Design: The G80's distinctive exterior design wraps around a plush interior featuring an advanced digital gauge cluster and large touchscreen. Whatever doubts existed regarding the G80's luxury status have been quelled by its combination of attractive styling, sublime materials, and high-quality primary control surfaces.

Value: The standard equipment list on the base Genesis G80 2.5T reads like a well-equipped mid-to-upper-grade competitor from Europe. Heated seats, a 14.5-inch touchscreen, synthetic leather, and a 12-speaker audio system make even the "cheapest" G80 feel rich with luxury versus the competition's base models.

Technology: If the large touchscreen isn't enough to impress, how about the list of advanced driver aids, including adaptive cruise control, evasive steering assistance, driver attention warning, and active lane keeping assistance? These are all standard features, with three-zone climate control, soft-close doors, remote automatic parking, and a 21-speaker Lexicon audio system available for buyers seeking maximum coddling.

What Needs Improvement

Fuel efficiency: The G80's larger V6 engine with all-wheel drive earns an EPA-estimated 20 combined mpg,

which is lower than German competitors that benefit from mild hybrid technology. The rear-wheel-drive four-cylinder G80 earns an EPA-estimated 26 mpg combined, or 25 mpg combined with all-wheel drive.
