The 2013 Honda Ridgeline fills the needs of most midsize pickup shoppers, but those who want a truck capable of serious towing or off-road capability may be left disappointed. Honda made a rearview backup camera standard for all trim levels for 2013, otherwise leaving the versatile truck unchanged.
Versatility is the Ridgeline's calling card, combining the most comfortable ride in the category with a truck that maximizes storage both inside the cabin and in its 5-foot bed. The bed features a lockable trunk and a two-way, swinging tailgate, and it’s impressively wide to make more room for cargo. The Ridgeline’s fully independent suspension and SUV-like construction team up to deliver a driving experience that surpasses competitors like the Toyota Tacoma or Chevrolet Colorado in terms of comfort and ride quality.
But the Ridgeline will come up short if you’re looking for a rugged off-roader or a haul-anything-anytime vehicle. Its maximum towing capacity is 5,000 pounds when properly equipped and its ground clearance isn't quite up to snuff with its competitors. Both are likely enough for most needs, but may fall short of truck-buyers’ wants.
Driving: The SUV underpinnings of the Ridgeline make for a smooth, quiet ride compared to its competition, and it feels more responsive to steering inputs. Thanks to its relatively small dimensions, it’s easier to squeeze in and out of tight spots than in other trucks.
Interior: Getting in and out of the Ridgeline is a bit easier than other midsize pickups, and once you're inside the cabin is wide and roomy, making it a nice place to be. The Ridgeline’s controls are intuitive and easy to use due to their simple and functional design.
Storage: The lockable, in-bed trunk is the stand-out feature of the Ridgeline, but it’s not the only place to stash your gear: The 60/40-split rear seat also folds up to reveal a large storage area on the floor of the cabin. There are also numerous cup holders and storage spaces for smaller items inside the truck.
Truck stuff: Honda built a versatile midsize truck that will satisfy the needs of most truck drivers. If you want a truck that leads its class in towing, comes with 4x4 or is otherwise better equipped for a day of off-roading, the Ridgeline might not be the truck for you.
