The 2014 Honda Ridgeline prioritizes comfort and versatility over muscle and grit, leaning on its SUV-based design to deliver the smoothest ride in the midsize pickup truck category. 2014 was the final year for the first-generation Ridgeline, and not much changed, save for the addition of the Special Edition trim level, which includes all the truck's optional bells and whistles.
Honda keeps it simple by offering the Ridgeline in just a few flavors. You can get the pickup with four doors, a V6 engine and all-wheel drive for all trim levels. The cab is spacious and versatile, giving passengers plenty of room to store their gear. The 5-foot bed features an in-floor storage locker and the tailgate both folds down and swings out.
While the Ridgeline's versatility is impressive, it doesn't deliver the traditional Truck stuff: craved by some shoppers. Its towing capacity is lower than competitors like the Toyota Tacoma and Chevrolet Colorado, and its lighter-duty suspension makes it less-suited to boulder-crawling and off-roading.
Driving: The Ridgeline's independent suspension and unibody construction provide a smooth, quiet ride compared to the competition, and its handling feels responsive to steering inputs. It doesn’t get the best fuel economy, but it’s otherwise easy to live with in everyday driving.
Interior: The interior is roomy, well-appointed and a pleasant place for passengers to spend time. It's also painless to get in and out of the Ridgeline, which is not always the case in midsize pickups. Controls and knobs inside the vehicle are clearly labeled and straightforward to use.
Storage: The lockable in-bed trunk is the Ridgeline's stand-out feature, along with the two-way, swinging tailgate. But those aren't the only nifty storage features on Honda's pickup; the 60/40-split rear seats fold up to make way for large items, and the Ridgeline does not want for cupholders.
Truck stuff: The Honda Ridgeline is a solid, versatile midsize pickup, but it falls short of competitors in towing and off-road capability. If you're looking for a truck that can crawl boulders or stretch the limits of towing capacity, check out the competition.
