Subcompact SUVs like the 2022 Hyundai Venue occupy the role of “entry level” cars these days, for buyers who want something small and economical. Even though it’s tiny, the interior is roomy as long as you’re not too tall, and the little Venue is comfortable enough for road trips, something that’s tough to pull off in a small car.
The standard four-cylinder engine comes only with a continuously variable automatic transmission, powering the front wheels. It’s adequate for the around-town daily drive, and the EPA-estimated combined fuel economy of 31 mpg is easily competitive for the class, which includes the Nissan Kicks and Toyota CH-R. Fuel economy figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new. Fuel economy may vary for reasons like driving conditions and vehicle history. Unless specified, figures are for vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission. See fueleconomy.gov.
The 2022 Venue doesn’t skimp on features, either. Wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ are newly standard for 2022, as are basic driver assist functions like automatic emergency braking and lane keeping assist, although more advanced features like adaptive cruise control aren’t available. Higher trim levels offer more equipment, but the Venue is a budget-conscious choice, so luxury items like leather seats aren’t on the menu.
Value: With a compellingly long list of standard features, including many that aren’t available on much more expensive cars from other manufacturers, the little Hyundai Venue already feels like an excellent value for buyers. Throw in top-notch build quality and upscale-feeling touches like an available leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, and the Venue feels like it punches well above its price tag.
Storage and cargo: On paper, the 18.7 cu-ft of cargo space behind the rear seats isn’t very large, but the way the Venue lays out its cargo area makes it eminently usable. Plus, the cargo area has an adjustable load floor and a stowable cargo cover. The hatch opens wide and has a low loading height, making it easy to get heavy items inside. There’s also decent space up front for your various personal items.
Interior and technology: As long as you’re not much taller than 6 feet, there’s decent space in the front of the Venue, and it’s easy to get in and out. The interior is also thoughtfully designed, with buttons and knobs that are logically arranged and clearly labeled. Considering the price, the Venue has good technology as well, with its standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus basic driver assist systems. It’s tough to beat, for the price.
Driving fun: As good as the Venue is, we wish it were a little more fun to drive. It nails the basics, but a bit more responsiveness in the steering, or a little playfulness from the suspension would help elevate it even further.
