The 2022 Lexus NX 250 gets new styling and a high-tech interior

The Lexus NX 250 is a compact luxury SUV, similar to the Acura RDX, BMW X3, or Genesis GV70. This new entry-level NX model joins the more powerful NX 350 and two hybrids, the NX 350h and NX 450h+, which we review separately. The NX 250 comes with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing a modest 203 horsepower.

The redesigned 2022 Lexus NX 250 kicks off the second generation of the SUV, which received new exterior styling and a renovated interior, highlighted by a wide central display angled toward the driver. A 9.8-inch touchscreen is standard on the NX, but a 14-inch screen is available on upper trims. Both screens feature a combination of virtual and physical controls for the climate system. This was a massive departure from prior Lexus models, which were equipped with a central display mounted far from the driver and controlled by a finicky touchpad. The Lexus NX 250 also comes with several helpful tech and driver-assist features.

5 reasons to buy the 2022 Lexus NX 250

What We Like

  • Impressive infotainment: Edmunds' test vehicle was equipped with the available larger 14-inch touchscreen. The screen features crisp and easy-to-read graphics and a responsive touch interface. The software is fairly menu-heavy, however, so it might involve a slight learning curve.

  • Numerous driver aids: Lexus' suite of driver aids comes standard and includes adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistance, adaptive headlights, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic alert. An enhanced 360-degree backup camera and parking sensors are available on Premium and Luxury trim levels.

  • Excellent visibility: The NX 250 is easy to see out of, both from the front and sides. Its swoopy rear styling does hinder visibility a bit when you're glancing over your shoulder, but the side mirrors are large enough to help mitigate blind spots. The rear camera resolution is clear and the view is more impressive on the larger center screen.

 What Needs Improvement

  • Small cargo area: With 22.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats, the NX 250 doesn't have as much cargo capacity as many of its rivals. The Genesis GV70, for example, offers 28.9 cubic feet and the Acura RDX offers 29.5 cubic feet. That said, the cargo area for the NX 250 is wide and mostly flat, making it easy to load larger or bulky objects.
