When you need to tow or haul more than a standard pickup truck can handle, it’s time to move up to a heavy-duty truck. Their extra capability usually comes at the cost of comfort and refinement, but the Ram 2500 (formerly named the Dodge Ram 2500) is among the best in the class when it comes to ride quality and interior appointments. The 2020 Ram 2500 also offers outstanding infotainment features and a full suite of driver aids. Its maximum payload capacity of around 4,000 pounds and maximum trailer towing capacity of around 20,000 pounds when properly equipped mean it’s quite capable, even those aren’t class-leading numbers. Various factors may impact towing capacity, including weight of passengers, cargo, and options/accessories.
After being redesigned for 2019, little changed for 2020. An optional 50-gallon fuel tank is available, but otherwise the Ram has the same options: an 8-foot or 6-foot 4-inch bed, two massive engines—a gas V8 and turbocharged six-cylinder diesel—and same seven trim levels, from the workmanlike Tradesman to the top-tier Limited model. If you want to venture off the beaten path, the Power Wagon is loaded with off-road features.

Strong engine choices: The Ram 2500’s standard gasoline V8 makes 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque, enough to meet the needs of most shoppers. If you need even more power for towing or hauling, the optional turbocharged diesel engine produces a tremendous 850 lb-ft of torque.
Excellent comfort: Heavy-duty trucks aren’t known for comfort, but the Ram 2500 is as good as it gets. The truck has a much less bumpy ride and a quieter cabin than its top competitors. Combine that with the highly comfortable seats, and the Ram 2500 is tough to beat. In higher trim levels, the cabin also has a near-luxury feel thanks to upscale materials.
Impressive tech features: The available 12.3-inch touchscreen is both impressive and easy to use, and wireless phone charging is available as well. You can also find a full suite of driver aids, including adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring. The 2020 Ram 2500 offers a comprehensive list of technology upgrades.
Diesel engine noise: If you want max towing capability out of your Ram 2500, you’ll need the optional turbocharged diesel engine. Unfortunately, the diesel creates noticeable vibrations in the cabin and an intrusive drone at freeway speeds. In the Ram 2500’s otherwise quiet cabin, the noise is more noticeable.
