Coming off a full redesign in 2019, the 2020 Volvo S60 rides high on the warm reception it received. This third-generation S60 made waves with its elegantly simple exterior styling, refined and welcoming cabin, and modern tech features. In the very competitive small luxury sedan class, it's a strong alternative to the more common German brands.
As a follow-up to last year's debut, the 2020 S60 adds a few items to the standard features list. A digital instrument panel is included with all models, the blind-spot warning system now comes with steering intervention, and the R-Design trim adds four-zone climate control, a tailored dashboard, and interior ambient lighting.
Compared to rivals such as the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class, the Volvo S60 favors comfort and driver-assist tech over performance, though it has plenty of power in its own right. The infotainment interface isn't as easy to use as others, but that's one of our few and minor complaints.
Comfortable and supportive seats: Back in 2016, Volvo partnered with orthopedic specialists to design and develop seats for their vehicles. As a result, these seats are among the most comfortable we've come across, with an optimal shape that provides long-distance comfort for a range of passengers. The generous padding also reduces pressure points and fatigue.
Powerful yet efficient plug-in hybrid: Volvo may be known more for driver-assist innovations than performance, but don't think that the S60 is slow or underpowered. The available plug-in hybrid T8 powertrain makes as much as 415 horsepower and can travel up to 22 miles on electricity alone. The engine is also very efficient and is estimated to get 30 mpg in combined city and highway miles.
Excellent driver-assist tech: Volvo is a leader in driver-assistance technologies. The frontal collision warning system almost eliminates false alarms, and the lane keeping assistance keeps the S60 firmly centered in its lane. The adaptive cruise control could be smoother with its brake and throttle inputs, though.
Unintuitive infotainment: The infotainment touchscreen operates most of the car's systems, but unfortunately the menu layout is less intuitive than that of many competitors. Some settings and options require a side swipe to bring them up, though it's not immediately apparent which screens have that function. This shortcoming is relatively minor, as most users will become familiar with the system over time.
