2022 Volvo S60: The comfortable and classy luxury sedan alternative

The compact luxury sedan class has long been dominated by the German brands, but if you're looking for something with a distinctly different European flair, we suggest checking out the 2022 Volvo S60. It's not as sporty as its BMW and Audi rivals, but its performance is nothing to scoff at either.

For 2022, Volvo revised the S60 trim levels, shuffling features between them and renaming the base engine the B5. About halfway through the year, the top T8 plug-in hybrid engine received a healthy power increase to 455 horsepower and electric range increased to 41 miles. Earlier models were rated at the previous 400 hp and 19 miles of range, so PHEV buyers should shop carefully.Range figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new and assume a full battery charge. Range will vary based on things like battery age, vehicle condition and history, driving and charging habits, accessory use, and driving conditions. Battery capacity may decrease with time and use. See fueleconomy.gov for more info.

The S60 distinguishes itself from the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and Audi A4 with its calm and inviting Scandinavian design. The S60 was also named a Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Overall, it's a comfortable and classy alternative to the German sedans.

5 reasons to buy the 2022 Volvo S60

What We Like

Comfortable seats: Volvo consulted with orthopedic specialists to help develop the front seats for all of its cars back in 2016 and the partnership resulted in some of the most comfortable seats we've experienced. They're optimally shaped to provide long-distance comfort for a variety of body types, and the generous cushioning reduces fatigue.

Powerful and efficient plug-in hybrid: It turns out that the S60's most powerful engine is also the most efficient. The T8 plug-in hybrid produces an impressive 455 horsepower and can provide up to 41 miles of range on electric-only propulsion. Once the battery is depleted, the hybrid engine is estimated to get 31 mpg in combined city and highway driving. Some earlier 2022 T8 models were limited to 400 hp and 19 miles of EV range.

Excellent premium audio: If you consider yourself an audiophile, you'd do well to seek an S60 that was optioned with the 15-speaker Bowers & Wilkins premium surround-sound system. Not only do you get powerful bass and ultra-clear high notes, you also get an environment that envelops you in sound no matter where you're seated.

What Needs Improvement

Unintuitive infotainment: Many systems are controlled via the infotainment touchscreen and the menu layouts aren't as intuitive as some rivals. To access some settings and options, you have to swipe left, but there's little indication of how to find those screens. It's not a deal breaker, though, as most users will get acclimated to the system with time.
