The Volvo S60 is a compact luxury sport sedan comparable to other European offerings such as the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The S60 brings a clean Scandinavian design, functional and comfortable interior, and a well-established front- or all-wheel drive to the market. Every S60 is made in South Carolina for the U.S. and world markets.
Although the S60 has been around since 2000, the current generation was introduced for the 2019 model year, so it’s still relatively fresh. Changes for 2023 are minimal, with new USB-C ports replacing the older USB-A style.
The standard S60 features a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with a mild hybrid system. This just means that there’s an electric motor that helps the gas engine when needed. You don’t need to do anything differently to use it. All S60 models come with an automatic transmission and your choice of front- or all-wheel drive. The S60 provides good value and excellent crash-test rating records.
Interior design and comfort: Volvo gets consistent accolades for its interior design and functionality. The brand is also known for having some of the most comfortable seats in the industry, and unlike some more performance-oriented brands, the side cushions are comfortable for larger American bodies. Lower back support is excellent and Volvo’s seat heater helps keep drivers warm and relaxed.
All-wheel drive: As a Swedish brand, Volvo understands winter. The optional all-wheel drive system is readily available and worth the extra price. With a good set of winter tires, Volvo drivers can tackle any weather. However, the AWD system costs about 2 MPG, dropping the EPA-estimated combined fuel economy from 30 to 28 MPG.
Driver-assistance features: Volvo’s reputation for driver-assist tech is well earned with consistent five-star crash test ratings from the NHTSA. S60 driver-assistance features such as blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning come standard on all trims, not just the high-end cars. Optionally, advanced features such as assisted steering are available.
Trunk space: The S60 has a smaller trunk than most of its rivals, and this can be inconvenient when you really need it. The sibling Volvo V60 wagon might be a better choice if you regularly need to haul more stuff than a compact sedan can carry.
