The Acura MDX is a comfortable midsize luxury SUV that offers three rows of seating in a well-appointed and spacious cabin. Unlike some SUVs in this class, the MDX has a roomy enough third-row seat that your adult passengers won't mind riding in the back on short trips.
The 2024 Acura MDX is a couple of model years removed from its redesign and as a result sees no significant changes for this year. When this fourth-generation MDX was introduced for the 2022 model year, it brought sharper styling and higher-quality interior materials, plus added the sporty Type S trim, with a powerful turbocharged V6 engine.
Overall, there's much to like about the 2024 MDX— it provides plenty of bang for your buck from its features when compared to European SUVs such as the Audi Q7 and BMW X5. Audiophiles take note: In addition to standard driver’s aids, the ELS STUDIO 3D® audio system on higher-trim models is one of the best you’ll hear at any price.
Seating comfort: Soft yet supportive, the MDX's front seats offer numerous adjustments; under-the-thigh, lumbar, and adjustable side bolsters are all here. The Edmunds test team noted that the seats felt plusher than those in either the Mercedes GLE or the BMW X5. Additionally, the seats also feature a three-stage massaging setting, plus heated and cooled front seats. Few SUVs in this class have seats at this level of comfort.
Cargo space: With 18.1 cubic feet of space behind the third row—48.4 cubic feet with the third row folded and 95 cubic feet max—the MDX has a slightly bigger cargo area than other three-row midsize luxury crossovers and one that's larger than some two-row competitors. The third- and second-row seats fold flat and provide a level load floor, and there's extra storage underneath the trunk floor. That movable load floor can be flipped over to reveal a plastic tray that can prevent the upholstered side from getting dirty.
Outstanding stereo system: The ELS audio system found on the Type S sounds on par with anything else in the industry. Edmunds’s testers haven't heard anything that's half as good as the MDX's audio system in a vehicle less than six figures. The sound stage was near perfect to our ears, as there was no distortion at high volume, deep bass, and clear sound among all genres.
Touchpad interface: Acura's True Touchpad Interface™ for its infotainment system is a definite miss and could be a deal-breaker for some buyers. The software has a steep learning curve and, in Edmunds' testing, was prone to glitches. This was a bit disappointing since the wide center screen is easy to read and the layout of the system is pretty ergonomic.
