The 2022 Lexus RX 350 marks the end of the line for this fourth-generation model that was introduced in 2016. Over those years, it solidified its position as a comfortable and efficient alternative to the German brands, but time caught up with the RX. Besides this RX 350, there’s also a more efficient RX 450h hybrid as well as a three-row RX 350L that are reviewed separately.
There were no significant changes for the 2022 RX 350 since engineers were likely hard at work on the next-generation model. While this RX deserved praise for its high levels of overall comfort, it was held back by a very frustrating infotainment interface that technophiles could consider a deal breaker.
If you’re able to easily use that trackpad controller, perhaps the RX is the midsize luxury SUV you’ve been looking for. Otherwise, we’d steer you toward alternatives such as the BMW X3, Volvo XC60, or Mercedes-Benz GLE.
Attractive and luxurious interior: The RX 350’s interior deserves praise for its handsome styling and high-quality materials, and it remained attractive and inviting throughout this generation’s life. You’d have a tough time finding a surface that wasn’t covered in either leather or a soft-touch plastic. It’s a solid entry among entry-level luxury SUVs and competitive against more expensive models.
Comfortable ride quality: For the most part, the Lexus RX 350 is focused more on comfort than performance and that has served this SUV well for decades. The suspension ably soaks up road imperfections and greatly reduces fatigue over long distances. The F Sport, on the other hand, attempts to add some handling performance with mixed results and that negatively affects comfort. It’s too stiff and gets jittery over rough surfaces.
Wide cargo space: With 18.4 cubic feet of available cargo capacity, the RX 350 isn’t as accommodating as some rivals, but it counters that with a more usable space. The cargo area's wide opening and floor make it much easier to load bulkier and heavier objects. For more room, the rear seats fold flat with the cargo floor. The RX is also rated to tow up to 3,500 pounds, when properly equipped.
Frustrating infotainment interface: Lexus’ trackpad infotainment controller is legendary for all the wrong reasons. It’s one of our least favorite in any vehicle ever because it’s distracting and difficult to use when you're driving. It uses a similar pad that you’d find on a laptop and moves an on-screen cursor. Unlike a laptop, though, the RX is a moving object and trying to select your desired button is incredibly frustrating. This alone can be a deal breaker for some.
