The Mini Cooper is one of the most recognizable cars on the road, with a rich history dating back 50 years. For the 2022 model year, the diminutive model gets fresh styling with a larger grille spanned by a body-color bar designed for a wider-looking stance. Headlights are also new, and taillights displaying the Union Jack flag are standard. Inside, the updated Cooper gets an 8.8-inch display screen as standard equipment for all trim levels. Mini offers the Cooper as a two-door or four-door Hardtop or as a convertible, each available in multiple trim levels. The Mini's go-kart-like handling is one of the hallmarks of this fun little car, but the cost of that enjoyment is a ride that can be stiff and choppy. While the four-door variant offers reasonable rear seat room, adults would not be comfortable spending any length of time in the rear seat of the two-door. The Mini offers a premium interior and standout design, which keeps it competitive with vehicles like the Volkswagen Golf GTI or Honda Civic.
Performance: Since its return to the U.S. market almost 20 years ago, the Mini Cooper has been best known for its outstanding driving characteristics and go-kart-like handling. Mini offers a range of engines and performance levels, including the high-performance John Cooper Works (JCW) that gets the fun combination of a 228-horsepower engine and a six-speed manual gearbox. Mini also offers the fully electric Cooper SE.
Interior: It may be a bit cramped for adults trying to fit in the rear seat, but passengers up front will be surprised at how roomy the cabin feels. A digital instrument panel and 8.8-inch central display give the Mini a high-tech look, further enhanced by the adjustable ambient lighting. Apple CarPlay® integration is available, but Android Auto is not.
Customizable: Many Mini owners like to customize their Coopers to add even more personality to the little car. Mini offers a variety of roof shades, upholstery options, and paint colors that let customers make the car their own, so there is a lot of variety on the used market to choose from. There's also a multi-tone roof that features a color gradient that shifts from blue to black for a unique look.
Utility: Given its small size, it's no surprise that the Mini Cooper's cargo area is on the small side, with just 13.1 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats. There is room for some grocery bags or a soft-sided piece of luggage, but there isn't space for anything larger. The rear seats fold flat, which does add some level of utility.
